The Problem: Housing Instability
On any given night, over 580,000 people experience homelessness in the United States. But the crisis runs far deeper than the unsheltered population — millions more live one missed paycheck, one medical emergency, or one rent increase away from losing their home.
Housing instability is directly linked to poor health outcomes: higher rates of chronic illness, mental health disorders, substance abuse, and premature death. For children, housing instability disrupts education, development, and long-term wellbeing.
Our impact: EPIC Shelter has helped stabilize or house over 620 households in Metro Detroit — keeping families safe, healthy, and connected to their communities.
What We Do
Emergency Rental & Utility Assistance
When families face immediate risk of eviction or utility shutoff, we provide direct financial assistance to stabilize their housing. We work quickly because in a housing crisis, every day matters.
Housing Navigation & Case Management
Our case managers work one-on-one with individuals and families to assess their needs, connect them with resources, and create a personalized plan for achieving stable housing. We walk alongside people through the entire process.
Eviction Prevention
We provide counseling and legal resource referrals to families facing eviction. Early intervention can prevent the devastating cascade of consequences that follow the loss of a home — job loss, school disruption, and health decline.
Rapid Re-Housing Partnerships
Through partnerships with housing agencies and landlords, we help families quickly transition from homelessness or housing instability into permanent, affordable homes with the support they need to stay housed.
Advocacy & Policy Work
Solving the housing crisis requires systemic change. We advocate for policies that increase the supply of affordable housing, strengthen tenant protections, and direct more resources toward housing-first approaches. We work with local government, housing authorities, and community coalitions to drive change at the structural level.
